I've avoided this game like the plague ever since it hit in the 90's. While I never had any problems with Dungeons & Dragons, Pokemon, comics, anime/manga, etc., Magic just always seemed like nerd overkill to me. I also knew that my addiction complex would kick in once I started and I'd become obsessed the same way I do with all my other hobbies.
Well, at NYCC they were giving away free 30-card starter decks which were ready for battle. My and the gf got some for the kids, but the 2 boys didn't want 'em and gave 'em to their sister and myself.
So I've been playing Magic with my gf's 9yo daughter for the past few days and we're both super addicted. She even blew a bunch of her b-day cash on some cards yesterday.
Does anybody else play? How hard is it to break the addiction? Where do I go to play people and trade cards and stuff?

I too feel the same way about Magic. There is a huge play community out here so it's been hard to avoid it as much as I want to. The artwork is so enticing and there are actually a lot of hot chicks who play it now.
I also have free starters from Wondercon and Comic-con but REFUSE to open them.
Im sure you've already figured it out by now, but there is a store locator on the official website. That can show you where to play. Addictive tendencies...well that is all on the person. I sort of see Magic the Gathering like cigarettes, once you start doing it you never really quit...

Yeah. As if I don't already have enough expensive hobbies.
There's 2 comic shops in my area that host Friday Night Magic and one of them has casual play on Tuesdays. FNM usually costs money depending on what kind of tourney it is, but you get cards to play with and keep. There's also certain rules about what series of cards you can have in your deck or some junk.
I'll probably just hit up a casual jawnz next Tuesday since it's free and not super serious. Maybe practice a bit until I feel comfy going to a Friday Night deal.

I picked up the Magic PC game during a steam sale a week ago, it was like 5 dollars, I couldn't not pick it up. The campaign mode kept me entertained for a good few hours, now I just play online 2-3 times a week with friends. We have awesome fun doing 4 player matches, shit gets hectic, but I'm not sure I'm patient enough to play it in person, it's a very convoluted game at times. I just wish I still had somewhere to play with my pokemon cards, nowhere in my state holds anything for them

We'd seriously play from like 10pm-6 or 8am. All my cards are back at my parents' house now though. My local comic shop used to do PKMN card game stuff, but they stopped for some reason. If you talk to your local shop or whatever, they're usually down for suggestions if enough other people are down for the same thing.

IT LIVES IN CALI
My friends and I just got back into playing the Pokemon TCG. We went to a pre-release event and it was fairly packed.
Not a lot of places near where I live support weekly Pokemon Leagues unfortunately. It sort of sucks to drive 30 minutes to play random people.
Yet the friendly matches with our play group have gotten interesting. Now that we're old enough to appreciate alcohol, if your opponent flips a prize you take a shot. ;D

I've been playing since 1996 just about. Haven't played since 2008 because the set quality seemed to go down.
Favorite set is definitely Ravnica, the flavor and mechanics there are both awesome.

The new hottness right now is Scars of Mirrodin which is all about casting artifacts, artifact creatures, and trying to give your opponent 10 poison counters to win the game. It's pretty crazy. Only been playing a week and already bought buttloads of cards and threw an Infect Deck together. Gonna' try and hit up an open casual meetup tomorrow and another one on Thursday. MIGHT hit up FNM if I can.

FNM is pretty sweet, I'd advise it. I also barely know what you're talking about because of all the new keywords they made up. Back in my day you put cards into play, not put them into the battlefield. And it was uphill through snow both ways.
Ah, counters. Reminds me of an old R/G/B combo deck I had where I'd spawn a hundred little 0/1 tokens for someone, then attack with a fattie that got +3/+3 for everything blocking it that forced everything to block it. Trample's a bitch.

You may have noticed my absence and lack of updates on the main site. Magic is totally to blame.
I'm a sad, sad man.
But I'm back now!
